Word order
In a main clause the verb comes second. After weil, dass and wenn it goes to the end.
| 1 | verb | rest |
|---|---|---|
| Ich | fahre | morgen nach Berlin. |
| Morgen | fahre | ich nach Berlin. |
| Nach dem Kurs | gehe | ich einkaufen. |
| Wenn ich Zeit habe, | rufe | ich dich an. |
In a statement the conjugated verb is always the second part. The first part can be the subject, a time, a place or a whole clause. Whatever comes first, the subject moves behind the verb.
In the exam
Find the conjugated verb first. In a main clause it is second; after weil, dass, wenn or ob it is last. deshalb and a whole wenn clause count as part one.
Verbs in two parts
Modal verbs and the Perfekt make a frame: the conjugated verb is second, the infinitive or participle goes to the end. A separable verb splits the same way, with its prefix at the end, but after a modal verb it stays in one piece.
Ich muss heute lange arbeiten.
| 1 | verb | middle | end |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ich | muss | heute lange | arbeiten. |
| Ich | habe | gestern lange | gearbeitet. |
| Ich | stehe | jeden Tag um sieben | auf. |
| Ich | möchte | morgen früh | aufstehen. |
Joining two clauses
After weil, dass, wenn and ob the conjugated verb goes to the very end of its clause. denn, aber, und and oder change nothing. deshalb and trotzdem count as the first part, so the verb comes straight after them.
| word | order | example |
|---|---|---|
| weil, dass, wenn, ob | verb at the end | …, weil ich krank bin. |
| denn, aber, und, oder | verb second | …, denn ich bin krank. |
| deshalb, trotzdem | verb right after | …, deshalb bleibe ich zu Hause. |

A yes/no question starts with the verb: Hast du morgen Zeit? A question with a W-word puts the verb second: Wann fängt der Film an?
