Writing a message
Answer all three points, then check the capitals and where the verb goes.
| to a friend | formal | |
|---|---|---|
| start | Liebe Anna, · Lieber Tom, | Sehr geehrte Frau Weber, · Sehr geehrter Herr Kohl, |
| no name | Hallo, | Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, |
| end | Viele Grüße · Liebe Grüße | Mit freundlichen Grüßen |
After the comma the next line starts with a small letter, unless it starts with a noun or Sie: Liebe Anna, danke für deine Nachricht.
Remember
Liebe Anna, Lieber Tom: the ending matches the person.
In the exam
Tick off the three points. Then read once for capitals and once for the verbs.
Useful sentences
| to | say |
|---|---|
| thank | Vielen Dank für deine Nachricht. |
| say no | Leider kann ich am Samstag nicht kommen. |
| give a reason | Ich kann nicht kommen, weil ich arbeiten muss. |
| suggest | Hast du am Sonntag Zeit? Wir könnten ins Kino gehen. |
| ask | Können Sie mir bitte sagen, wann der Kurs beginnt? |
| close | Ich freue mich auf deine Antwort. |
Before you hand it in
Remember
Every noun starts with a capital, and so do Sie, Ihnen and Ihr.
Check four things: a capital on every noun (die Wohnung, am Abend); Sie, Ihnen and Ihr with a capital when they mean you; the verb second, or last after weil and dass; and at least one sentence for each of the three points.
Use only German words. If one is missing, say it another way: not die Location, but die Lage, or Die Wohnung liegt gut.
Traps
Wrong: Ich komme mit meinem familie.
Right: Ich komme mit meiner Familie.
die Familie: a capital, and the dative meiner.
Wrong: Mir gefällt die Location.
Right: Mir gefällt die Lage.
Only German words, even simple ones.
Wrong: Liebe Tom,
Right: Lieber Tom,
Tom is a man: Lieber.
Wrong: Können sie mir helfen?
Right: Können Sie mir helfen?
Polite Sie always takes a capital.
