German False Friends

German False Friends: 40 Words That Fool English Speakers

False friends are German words that look like English ones but mean something else. Bekommen means to receive, not to become. Das Gift is poison. Der Chef is your boss, ein Handy is a mobile phone, and bald means soon. Mix them up and you can end up saying something very different from what you meant.

This deck collects 40 of the most common false friends, from nouns and verbs to adjectives and adverbs such as also (so, therefore), eventuell (possibly), sensibel (sensitive) and spendieren (to treat someone). Each card says what the word does not mean, what it really means, and gives an example sentence with a translation. Most are A2 to B2, with a few C1 words.
