German Modal Verbs
German Modal Verbs: können, müssen, dürfen and More
German has six modal verbs, können, müssen, dürfen, sollen, wollen and mögen, plus the everyday möchten. This deck covers all of them and the spots where they trip English speakers up: nicht müssen means “don't have to”, while nicht dürfen means “must not”.
Beyond the basics, it covers the nuances: sollen for something you heard (“he is said to be”), wollen for a claim, and the Konjunktiv II forms könnte, sollte, müsste and dürfte for polite requests and guesses. You also get preferences with gern, lieber and am liebsten, and formal stand-ins like in der Lage sein. 37 cards, each with an example sentence and translation, from A1 to B2.
