German A2 exam prep

Ten free flashcard decks for the Goethe-Zertifikat A2, 1,611 cards in all. Together they cover the official Goethe A2 word list and the grammar the exam expects, plus the phrases you need to write a short message and exam-style tasks to practise the speaking test. The vocabulary is standard A2, so the pack also suits telc Deutsch A2 and the ÖSD A2 exam.

Every card has an example sentence with an English translation. Nouns show their article and plural, verbs their Perfekt, and most words have IPA pronunciation. All decks are free: try one without signing up, or clone it to study with spaced repetition.

What each deck is for

The exam phrases cover Schreiben and Sprechen: how to open and close a message, apologise, invite, suggest another time, and ask and answer the questions of the speaking test. Speaking Practice puts them to work: tasks like those in Sprechen Teil 2 and 3, each with a model answer to compare against and listen to. Signs, Ads & Announcements trains the short texts of Lesen and Hören, from notices and small ads to station announcements. Grammar Patterns drills the structures A2 tests, from word order and the Perfekt to cases and adjective endings, one gap at a time. The verbs and the five topic decks are the vocabulary every part of the exam builds on.

Numbers are not in the pack. They have their own deck, German Numbers, Time & Dates.

How to study it

At 30 new cards a day the whole pack takes about 54 days, so start around two months before the exam. Begin with the five decks above, then add the topic decks. Reviews grow as you go, so leave a few minutes each day for them.

About two weeks before the exam, sit a full practice test under exam conditions to find what is still missing. The Goethe-Institut publishes free practice tests on its website.
